Learn How the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Will Affect You

Date Posted: May 1st, 2009

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which goes into effect June 1, 2009, will affect the types of identification documents that travelers can present when crossing U.S. borders by land or sea.  In an effort to provide its hotel guests with access to clear information regarding how WHTI will affect their travel plans, Choice Hotels has included a button on its travel alerts  website to link visitors to the WHTI website (www.GetYouHome.gov).

When WHTI goes into effect June 1st, travelers will need to present a valid, acceptable document that denotes both identity and citizenship when entering the U.S. by land or sea. Most travelers will be able to select from one of six different document options, based upon their individual travel needs. For example, at land and sea ports of entry, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will accept valid U.S. Passports, U.S. Passport Cards, state or province-issued Enhanced Driver’s Licenses or any of the three Trusted Traveler Program cards presented by U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean.
